A reputation built on solid foundations
Archibalds was founded in 1840 by Alderman T.J. Tomlinson and passed on to John and George Archibald in 1910, who held ownership for 14 years. The business supplied iron and steel to local farriers, collieries and engineering works. In 1924 the late W. McIntyre purchased interests and took control. He set about expanding the business to become a stockist of materials for the building trade. The business was then passed on to Mr McIntyre’s son and grandson.
In 2001 Archibalds was bought by Saint-Gobain Building Distribution the leading building materials distributor in Europe. However, Archibalds remains controlled locally. The company is currently experiencing its most successful period ever and as a result there are plans to open additional branches to expand the Archibalds network in the near future.
